Wallrush: A Quoridor Variant
Play Wallrush free online, a two-player Quoridor race game where both pawns start on the same line of a 9 by 13 board and sprint for the same edge.
How Wallrush Works
Wallrush is played on a tall board, 9 squares wide and 13 high. In classic Quoridor the pawns start on opposite edges and cross the board toward each other. Here both pawns start side by side on the same row, with four rows of space behind them, and both race to the same goal: the top row.
- One action per turn. Move your pawn one square up, down, left or right, or place one wall. Player 1 moves first.
- Walls. Each player has 10 walls. A wall is two squares long. It blocks movement across it for both pawns, and walls cannot overlap or cross each other.
- Keep a path open. You may not place a wall that leaves either pawn with no route to the top row.
- Meeting the other pawn. If the other pawn stands right in front of yours, jump over it. If a wall or the edge blocks the jump, step to either side of it instead, exactly as in Quoridor.
- Borrowed moves. While your pawn stands right next to the other pawn, with no wall between them, you may also move to any square the other pawn could move to from where it stands, jumps and side-steps included.
- Winning. The first pawn to reach any square of the top row wins.
Each turn has a 32 second clock, and each player has 5 minutes for the whole game. If a turn runs out of time, the game moves your pawn one step along its shortest route. If your 5 minutes run out, you lose.
Things to Think About
Because both pawns share one goal, you are racing in the same lane as your opponent. A wall that slows them down can also slow you if your routes overlap, so look at both routes before you place one. The room behind the starting line is yours to use: stepping sideways to a clear column can beat walking straight into a wall.
For the full wall, jump and side-step rules, read the Quoridor rules. Wallrush uses them, plus the borrowed moves above.
Wallrush: Frequently Asked Questions
What is Wallrush?
Wallrush is a free two-player Quoridor variant played on a tall 9 by 13 board. Both pawns start side by side on the same line and race to the same goal row, placing walls to slow each other down.
How is Wallrush different from classic Quoridor?
In classic Quoridor the pawns start on opposite edges and cross the board toward each other. In Wallrush they race in the same direction, and a pawn standing next to the other one may also use its moves (borrowed moves). The wall and path rules are those of the Quoridor rules.
How many walls does each player have in Wallrush?
Each player has 10 walls. A wall is two squares long, and you may never block every route to the top row.
Can I play Wallrush online for free?
Yes. Wallrush is free in your browser, with no download and no account. Two players take turns on one device, or you can invite a friend to a private room and play from separate devices.
